    Default A Day Of Ones

High 30’s last night kept me home til about noon today. With the crappie spawn done I’m waiting for the bluegill and Crackers to go on bed and the only way to find out is to go and look. Being the first day after a major cold front I didn’t expect much but would hope to find a few beds and maybe a fish or two. About 60* and wind a steady 15 to 20 and some gusts along with that had me hiding from it all day. Some of the areas I usually fish are weed choked and inaccessible so I worked through them pretty quick. Moved on to “my office” and found the weeds much less. I also found something about one of my rods that made me smile. I’ve used Nanofil for a few years now and love its castability but when the wind gets up I have to put it away or work it carefully in the wind, not being fused it has a big wind signature that lets the wind blow it all over. I have another rod that has some Sufix nanobraid in 2lb that is fused and handles completely different. Cut my frustration level considerably. I had to throw a little heavier tiny beetle spin with a Charlie brewer 1” that looked a lot like a blue thunder that I use a lot color wise. Worked very well til the boot tail got pulled off. But back to the fish
While moving from my first spot I left my jig dragging along behind and to my surprise, it got a hard hit. A small hybrid Striper was the first fish and a good fight. All the other fish came after I moved to my office. I wound up with 1 redbreast, 1 coppernose bluegill, one crappie, the Striper and 5 garden variety bluegill. So overall a good day but keep in mind that none of these were keeper size but the fun factor was great. I thought that one of Randy’s super ultralights would have been good here today. They were kinda clustered and very picky as to what they would hit with normal favorites going untouched. Phone was on charge so no pics, only the crappie would have been longer than my hand. Mama called and threatened me with a trip to Olive Garden and I was about done so off I went. Thanks for the read and sharing a relaxing day with me, I never saw another boat til it was time to leave…..Skeet

Good story and trip, skeet. No skunk is a good day out. That striper sounds like it was fun!

Something I forgot to mention was the pigs, wild ones. While I fished this one area I kept hearing the palmetto leaves being bothered. Having seen deer before I thought that was what it was. Then I heard a bigger commotion and a loud deep grunt, so I sat and watched. I saw one that was mid thigh high, two or three that were knee high and heard other movement but never saw them. The big one had a tail longer than any I’ve ever seen, keep in mind I’m a city boy without much experience with these wild critters. All solid black and about 50 to 60 yards away through intermittent cover. I was thinking how well one of the knee high ones would be halved on a smoker. First of these I’ve seen in that area but you can be sure I’ll be researching who owns that ground so I can get permission to go in search of.

Fighting the wind can be tough, but you beat it! Congrats.
