Don’t know if I’m off target but here goes. My favorite reel for UL is a 1500 size, and its of better quality than my Presidents by a good margin. They’re older Diawa Capricorn’s, I have two. The reels outshine anything else in my stable and have a few things I see as a bit different from most. The spool is a bit taller than some and also a bit shallower, and performs extremely good with 4lb mono and a 1/16 and 1/32. One now has 6lb braid which does well, far better than the mono. The spool being a bit larger than the 1000 series has a velvet smooth drag that has no sticky spots that we all hate. It has proved itself many times on larger fish with light line. I have an affinity for fishing undergunned, and this reel does a fine job. Not having a longer (over 6’6”) JDM rod like many here, I don’t have a need for a JDM reel to go on it. That would make a very good combo but not for me, not yet. The larger spools allow the drag to be set very light and I feel they’re smoother than those of smaller diameter. It goes without saying to buy as many bearings as the budget will allow. If I had to choose one reel for very light line it would be of the larger spool variety with extra spools for beefing up the line when needed. A word I’ve seen used referring to spools is reciprocated weight. How much does the spool weigh, and how much pressure does it take to get the spool moving. Will the line stand the pressure to get a machined aluminum spool moving or would a composite spool be more appropriate? These are thoughts that should be considered when making choices for a good, versatile reel that is like a thought in your hand that takes no effort to fight whatever happens to find the other end of the line. Hope this helps someone, it took me a while to figure some of this out as I bought reels that I wasn’t happy with.
