Lot of the swamps around here use to be like that. Most have been drained except for the state and federal protected ones. They are prime fish habitat but when they get thick enough its hard to do anything. Tough too, man if you snag one look out. If you find a good size opening you can cast some. But the long pole was made for just such a situation. Fish love the pads. Love to hang you up in em too when they get hooked.

Being from up-state NY, I used to icefish alot. 10 yrs in Ocala area I now go thru the lily pads and rake holes in them like drilling a hole to ice fish. 10-12 holes then go back to 1st one and vertical jig with baitcaster, live bait and heavy line!

You can do the same thing with hydrilla. Rake a big hole and go back next day.

The lilly pads and other weeds are taking over my best lakes. Looks like I'm going to have to invest in a mud motor to get to some good spots and rake out some holes for later. Good Idea.

Take a string trimmer with you and drop the head in the water to cut you out holes to fish. It's southern ice fishing!
