A few gills from KY Lake
After hearing that the gills and crackers were starting to bite, me and my neighbor FishTale decided to go on the hunt for them. We usually don't target them until later in the month but the unseasonably weather this year has gotten the water temps about 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule. We started out fishing areas that have been very productive in the past but the water was so low, we just couldn't get on them. We caught a few terrorists (pumpkinseeds) and one small shellcracker but no bluegill. I got a hunch and went to one spot near deeper water and started drop shotting a hand tied jig and caught several nice ones. After things slowed down there, we decided to hit another location to crappie fish that was also near deep water but had no luck. I was getting a few hits but didn't catch anything so I decided it may have been bluegill and went back to a drop shot and immediately caught 4 or 5 dink crappie. We continued to fish there and ended up with 29 nice thick bluegill to ride back home with us. This year is starting off quick but I'd like to see the water get closer to summer pool. The lake is on time for depth, but the warmer weather has gotten the fish and fisherman scrambling to do their thing a bit early.
