When I started I bought one of these from Bass Pro in a 7' 4wt and love to fish a small popping bug over bream beds with it.

Hey Everyone,
I was going to give fly fishing a shot this spring and summer. I was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction for what kind of rod and reel to get? I don't want to spend more than $200. Also what are some good fly brands, colors, size, fly line size, rod length, action? I am really in the dark on this and just looking for some help.
Thanks
Zack

An 8'6" or 9' 5wt is a good, all-around outfit. I recommend you not "mix and match" the rod, reel and line. In other words, don't buy them separately. Buy a "combo" which includes rod, reel, line, and leader -- ready to go. In your price range, I'd get either a Redington Crosswater combo or a TFO combo:

Oscar, "Zack!....(I'm on other side of pond).....ZACK!!!!! Do you see how BIG this fish is!!!!
FYI: EZflyfish.com has the Crosswaters and certain TFOs on closeout.

Gave good advice 8.6-9 5wt is a good choice. I love to cast the "bully Bluegill" fly on the beds in the spring. Nothing like it. Check out Cabelas they have some real nice combos that are very reasonably priced.
I am really enjoying fly-fishing much more since I went back to fiberglass. Check the rod discussions on this site, Fiberglass Flyrodders • Index
Very timely thread. Looking to get into this myself. We live on a 58 acre HOA lake that has some huge bull bluegill and impressive red-ear that would be real fun on a fly rod.
The best way to get to where you want to be in the future is to act like you are there TODAY.
