    Default Bait vs flies

Will a live cricket/worm under a bobber catch more gills than a bream fly (bream killer) under a micro popper? Wich method is more productive?

I do much better with bait or a jig tipped with bait than I do with flies. For me, it's not even close. A couple of weeks ago, I tried a bait vs. fly experiment. I started off at one of my favorite ponds with flies -- got 10 nice gills in about two hours. Then, I switched to a black jig tipped with a waxworm. I went back through the exact same areas and got 35 gills in the next hour and a half. Although I didn't use them on this trip, live maggots under a float are even deadlier.

Still, the fly rod is a lot of fun. It really shines when the fish are shallow. Love the topwater strikes! :D

I've seen it happen both ways, and theirs days when one method will kick butt out of the other. I try to have both fly and spin equipment with me and let the fish tell me which one they prefer. And then their are those days when they'll drive you nuts cause they don't want either one LOL

True, every method has it's day. Being versatile will get you more fish.

If I am after 'Gills or Shellcracker then the ticket is a 1/64 jig tipped with a wax worm or a #8 or #10 hook tipped with maggots or waxies. You can also use teardrop ice jigs tipped with waxies.

Also try a crappie nibble on those jigs ship recommended. They worked pretty good for us just a couple weeks ago.

I second that, but I also tip with crickets or crappie nibbles. Also try a fly like a McGinty Bee tipped under a wieghted float.

Those are pretty good Chaunc. I always do better when I "Hedge my bet" by tipping a small fly or jig with a waxie or maggot. That way you have the ""Attracting" qualities of a fly or jig with the "Triggering" qualities of the smell of meat. That way you get the best of both worlds my friend.

By the way Chaunc. If you roll the crappie nibble in garlic salt and in a very tiny hint of glitter then set it in the air to harden a little it stays on the hook longer. The falling "Flakes" look and reflect like scales falling in water and that attracts curious fish.
