I've had the same experience many times at Carl Blackwell and Ft.Cobb. The fastest crappie bite I've ever had was on a 1/80th oz. orange head w/ peacock body and pheasant tail at 2' off the CB dock. Over 80 crappie, and the longest that jig was in the water was maybe 5 seconds. Last year at Ft.Cobb, on the coldest, windiest day of the winter, 51 crappie succumbed to a 1/16th oz. hair jig at 3'-7' off the north side. It's a good thing I was raised in Montana and did a lot of ice fishing (w/o a shelter). The other guys could not even face that strong north wind. Only one of them tried, and he didn't last a minute.

I love challenges like weather and location. It makes the catch that much more rewarding. I don't have a boat so I have to rely on my buddies. So sometime I will literally walk miles through underbrush to get to a spot. But I rarely come back empty handed. I've yet to fish either of those lakes. Looking forward to hitting them all.

joe, part of your post reminded me of a trip when I was a youth (about a hundred years ago). I was working my way down a mountain trout stream in Montana, and had to squat down and bend over to work my way along the cow paths through the thick willows to get to the next hole. With my head down and moving slowly, I heard a cow spook right in front of me and take off through the willows. Another three steps and I was looking down at a steaming pile of fresh moose poop. The good Lord was watching over me, because the odds were more likely that the moose would have flattened me. Later that summer, about a hundred yards from that spot, a young bull challenged us and our Volkswagen as we returned to our camp spot. He pawed the ground and snorted for about 15 minutes, before walking off.

Yes God had you in His hands that day to be certain. Ain't much you can do to protect yourself from something like that. Makes for a great story though. That's another place I've never been. Big sky country. Lots to look forward too in the life of someone who enjoys the simpler things. Thanks for sharing Bigskyfisherman.

I think I saw you. I was in the Ranger Reatta. When I had my other boat I had side scan but hardly ever used it so all I use is downscan and 2d. I hope you know that most of the brush piles you can download into your unit which makes them a piece of cake to find.

Yea i have all back to 2010 waiting on sd to load up. is it worth going back farther on the piles? Was alot of work to get the older ones into gpx with just lat and longitude. How long do the piles hold before breaking down?

I only have 3 years back. I think they begin to break down much further back than that.
