Took a couple of fish hungry friends out last Friday and fished around the rain and wind until the Lightning showed up. We had a good time catching sandies for a while and left em biting to dunk a pound of Arkansas jigs in the lake. 10-14fow and 83 degrees surface temps. We caught over 200 over, in and around just 2 brush piles and the bite never slowed down. Usual summer pattern for us- several one pound 12" fish but nothing over that size. 3 out of 4 fish were hitchhikers so we had to keep our Jedi awareness high to sense the bite. The fish that really hammered it were nearly all about 9" long and were rewarded with a quick release. Something new to me are the Jigglers, who do more than hitchhike (just hold on quietly) but less than thump it- they just jiggle it a little bit. Never noticed this bite before but maybe it's just my inner geezer emerging. Pictured are my buddy from BAHS and his son, who rides bulls on the Senior Circuit so apparently I am older than I look. They needed fish for a big fish fry on Saturday night and left with 74 good ones , luckily all crappie- no striped trash fish. Saw a few other boats out and everybody seemed to be catching fish except the walleye guys- I was sure hoping that would last a little longer than it did. It was cool and cloudy all day and getting wet was a good trade off for getting burnt by the sun.

Nice job, Cc. I got to float tube on a mountain lake here in Montana. It is loaded with big Brook Trout. We got some Okie weather yesterday, when a tornado touched down about a half mile north of us. By the time the day was over, we had hail, rain, and snow, definitely not a typical July day in Montana.

I had a tough day yesterday. The wind was fierce, but the lighting was more fierce. Minnows did best, but I caught several on pumpkin/chart brush glider. The thermocline is all over the place. Some places it is 6', others 21', and then nonexistent.

Neoprene, under armour, and sweats keep us fairly comfortable, but the cold water requiring you to take numerous trips to the bank to dehydrate is a pain. We have been to three lakes in one area, and have been sharing the trails with a cinnamon-colored black bear. He is rather shy, unlike the Yellowstone
Park's problem bears that the Park Service transplants into the areas we fish. So far, the problem bears (mostly the grizzlies) have only done "bluff charges", but they do put the fear into the horses. My brother carries a .41 pistol, but thus far hasn't had to use it.
Brookies and cutthroats make an excellent campfire dinner, and although they aren't quite as tasty as crappie or bluegill fillets, they are easier to cook. We just take a forked willow branch, weave the ends into a kind of basket, tie the fish onto the basket with willow bark, and cook over the fire.
I'm going to try to figure out how to get some pictures from my phone onto this PC, which is not mine, now that that I am almost semi-techno-literate.

Just to prove that my Momma raised a fool I took a couple of geezers even older than me out on the lake on the hottest day of the year and zero cloud cover. Knew we were in trouble when one of em showed up wearing all black clothing. Because one of my new friends had chores to do we got a late start at about 9am and headed to a big brush pile in 10 fow to drown some Arkansas Jigs. Not a bite so we moved to a nearby pile in 18 Fow and started catching fish. When that spot turned into a dink factory we went back to the shallow pile and one of us crushed 11-12" fish, about 30 of em while the other two tried to learn what hitchhikers and jigglers feel like. They never really got there but still seemed to enjoy the day eating ribs and dodging crappie as I threw over and around them towards the two live wells on the Lund. We left em biting at about 3pm with Johnny Cash begging us to " try one more spot." Nice to see RR Steve in the parking lot and to get my guys in the air conditioning. I was surprised to see my truck thermometer reading 103 on the way home . We cleaned 47 for my fish hungry buds- with 2 13" fish that only weighed a pound each. Lots of 11.5" ers weighing in at 3/4 lb and a few 10" fish. Never tried jigs- stayed pretty busy tying on drop shot rigs and running the TM and untangling rigs etc.. It was a good day and nobody got hurt but maybe not the wisest trip I ever took. Including a picture of Johnny Cash, The Man in Black. He was a hoot and was very gratifying when he had a fish on!

Good on you for taking them! The Johnny Cash wannabe has to be a transplant right? Surely. Not raised here.
