Actually, was going to use it for camping. Wanted to try making some "rocket stoves" where a 4' hole is drilled or cut 3/4th the length of the piece and a 2cnd hole the same the same dia is drilled horizontally to meet the 1st. Apparently they make AWESOME cooking fires and are 2-3X longer lasting than split wood...the only thing really holding me up is waiting for a decent day with NO wind. Btw, worked for a tree service for 3 1/2 yrs; am confident can safely top out the tree and drop it; don`t happen to have a small chain saw, but did buy a Rocket saw, which should work.

Saw one of those rocket stoves built and used on that New show "Live Free or Die" on National Geographic.
The Young Couple built it to cook outside...DANG THING WAS AMAZING...once they got it going it was throwing HEAT ONLY like a rocket engine!
Alot of that show is BS, but this young couple and the young hunter from Calif have SOME usable ideas....the dude living wild in the Mountains of NC is starving to death and has to hit the grocery store, and the Dude in the Georgia swamp is a Loon who is lucky to be alive....I think God keeps him alive for HIS amusement! lol

I actually looked them up also...I have been looking for a unique fire pit....I think I'm going build one of the Big Rocket Stoves/Hearths out of fire brick, or fire brick and stove pipe...I like the idea of a super clean burn and all that heat...plus you can cook off of it!

It may seem off topic, but I'll circle back around....some of us love the water so much that we bring it into our homes.
I'll admit that I have a fish addiction....since I can't fish as often in winter I enjoy watching fish.
My experiment with my Oscars was a huge disaster, they killed 20 fish and armored cats...then at 6 inches they killed each other....I learned about predator fish and how they kill.
So in my 75 gallon, I decided to build a peaceful community tank, so I can watch fish relate to cover, feed, school, etc.
Then I built two five gallon tanks to raise Siamese Fighting Fish...they have always been my favorite freshwater tank predator...and I put one in the community.
I have 20 Neon Tetras, 20 Rasbora Haps, 8 Albino Corys, 2 Otto Cats, 20 Ghost Shrimp, and my white and red Betta. Then my Scarlett and Gray Betta lives with 5 Shrimp in his fg I've gallon...and Dale's Blue Betta is in his 5 with 2 Ottos.

Aquariums are a great tool to see how underwater environments evolve and function...most fish have the same basic patterns and needs....seeing how they function up close, brings an understanding of a larger environment.
The Bettas are killers, they need 100% protein....the Neons and Haps are too fast and are just trying to stay a step ahead of the Betta.
Seeing how they use the cover and open areas is a way to think about fishing while staying warm.

My next project is trying to figure out how to utilize my 220 gallon tank for Crappie, Walleye, perch, gills, and Smallies....or something close to that!
    Good Fishing To All.

A former coworker claimed he monitored the fish in his fish tank. When they were more active, he would go fishing. Anyone know whether there is any evidence as to whether this is a good predictor for a good time to fish?

An Aquarium is a controlled enviroment...with power filters, hoods, lighting, heaters, cover, etc...you control everything...also the house has an effect...my fish are active all the time until they Croak!lol

IMHO...Anytime you can go fish is a good time!
Let me explain....I would hear all the "tales" about Cottonwoods Blooming, Falling Barometer, Rain, East Wind, Full Moons, etc...So basically you are telling me half of the year a fish starves??
They are opportunistic, if a bait, lure, etc, is presented properly, then something will eat....that is, if you know how to find them!
To do that, you have to know the fish and bascially understand what it is doing at those times....if the pressure is falling, do they head to cover, deep water, or structure??...but then again, you also have to understand that air pressure only effects shallow water. Other forces like high wind, heavy rain, blue skys, cold fronts, etc, have more of an effect and will make they move.....sometimes if food is around, they stay put like nothing is happening. Their main basic instinct for survival is to feed....everything else is secondary after that. They feed to get bigger, they feed to spawn, they feed so they can rest, they feed so they can swim and survive or fight.
Knowing the fish allows you to figure out where they go for protection or if they are nervous....but it doesn't stop them from an easy meal.

Johnny, Pat, Steve, Don, and I, have fished disasterous weather...wind driven rain, rollers crashing like an ocean, floods, etc, and caught fish when everyone said it was impossible. We did it just to prove you could catch fish. Granted, you may not limit everytime out, but you can have fun, get a meal, or sometimes a trophy if you want. We fished falling/rising barometers, fronts, full moons, "Wrong Moon phases", Sun Spot eruptions, etc...trust me, you can catch fish...Normally, if you are not catching fish, "YOU" have done something wrong or "You" can't handle the weather!
I've said it many times, everyone is a "Professional" and can catch fish during the spawns....you are a true fisherman if you can catch fish during the other times...that takes learning the fish, learning their patterns, learning the water, and developing a system and technique to display your bait under any circumstance to make them react to it....and no, I am still not there yet....but each year I get closer!

    Good Fishing!

Actually, many fish feed in conditions that most humans would find extremely "uncomfortable` if not down right dangerous. Have caught walleye actively feeding in 4` waves at CJ from the tip of the S Marina breakwater with winds where had to use a 1/2 ounce sinker on a small pay lake slip bobber to get the bait down to them before it blew it past where they were holding on the edge of the slack water. The fish often thrive in conditions we as warm blooded human beings just can not easily handle...
