The new ones use a new refrigerant and run at a lot higher pressure. They sell the units by a .... spelling may not be right....sere rating....the higher the sere number the better the perfomance and efficientcy....i bought the one with the highest rating.

The company with the $7,250 price called today. The system comes with 5 yrs labor and 10 yrs parts warranty. He will add another 5 yrs labor and drop the price to $6,640.

Yes, I went to the auction friday night. There is an ac guy to goes too. I gave him the info and he was to call today after checking prices. He said his last 30# jug of 22 was $584. and was told that it would go higher during the summer. The last 50# jug of 22 I bought was $85 in '91.
I have some old 14 oz cans of 12, I paid 2 or $3 for them. He said, if you can find them now they are 70 to $80.

I help my FIL during slow times with his hvac business.

R22 is getting hard to get and is high.

These new HE units are nice. Expensive but seem to do a fine job keeping up with the heat while not making your electricity bill sky high.

Get someone who knows what they are doing! When you're dropping that kind of coin it helps to know the person/company will stand behind their product. Have already worked on several that couldn't get anyone to do Warrenty work on.

    Stay cool!

Exactly right thats why I went with the Carrier brand and a local dealer that has been in the business for over 50 years......i have been using this dealer for 40 years and they are good folks.

This is for my house in Horn Lake. My daughter is gone to much to hang units out of the windows.
My stepdad wouldn't replace the central unit here so I have 3 12,000 btu window units.

Not as long as you don't have a leak. Pull that top cover with electricity disconnected, take a hose and wash out the cooling coils a couple of times a year. Keeps head pressure down and makes life easier on compressor. As much as anything when it gets to a Serbian point you will need to replace heater side because of rust out or burn out making them dangerous to run. The Government came out with new mandates a couple of years ago upping the sear ratings on A/C units and on some refrigeration units. Thus the need for a new more efficient environmentally friendly refrigerant. Like G said these new refrigerants work under a lot higher pressure than say 22. So then they tax the stew out of those products to force them off the market and force you to buy newer more efficient units. Like G said also, they are really efficient and will really cut your operating cost and go a long way toward paying for them selfs in not to long a time unlike years past where ROI took forever.

The new refrigerant is 410A run about double head press. than r22 good stuff. The seer rating are a lot better, also that's why they cost more.

Being a '71 model that's what I'm afraid of. Replace the ac this year and replace the heater next year.
