Get a 20ga with a rifeled barrel, buckshot wont hurt it and with slugs it's good for over 100yds.
Get some of those home defense rounds that have a slug and 3 buckshot. I would alternate these every other round with #4's.

shotguns are o.k. inside. problem is you can have multiple targets at various ranges outside. A standard M-4 is hard to beat. What ever you decide on, Mount a usable light on it, and practice with it. Think of the effective range of each. A carbine is a better choice, if you learn how to use it. The government spent millions of dollars perfecting one. It works. If you want cheaper.. get an AK=47. It works also. Ask our troops...KS-10

300 blackout, hit em out to 200, suppressor, short barrel rifle stamp and can mow em down with a 160 grain bullet... Haha but for home defense, I don't wanna shoot through walls into other rooms, load this shotgun with 3 buckshot, 4 slugs. A repeating rifle in 9mm, 357 or 44 mag isn't a gun I want to shoot any further than a 12 gauge slug... I have this gun by my bed in the 12 gauge model. Plus if they're in the yard and not posing an immediate threat, better not shoot. Invite em inside first.

Winchester lever action 30-30. I kinda like the Kel-Tec and Hipoint carbines in 40 cal. Not expensive and fun to shoot. I have one of each of them and prefer the Kel-Tec, since it accepts my Glock magazines.
