The only way to get their profits down is to flood the market with oil. In order to get that, we will need legislation and then force them to drill by threatening them with taking away tax breaks and subsidies. We have got to get the futures market down to their break even cost if you want to do away with their record profits. Just threatening more supply has started to bring the price down. The markets is what is causing the profits. They are just the beneficiaries. Their arrogance is what makes people so mad and their lack of trying to educate the public on what is going on. That is what makes me so mad at them. CF

Default just a little more information

I've seen where the Democratic controlled congress is talking about a "drill it or lose it" bill for the oil companies here in the United States. Of course, this new bill would have zero effect on the vast majority of oil companies drilling in the rest of the world. I work for a large oilfield service company and what most people not involved in the petroleum business are not aware of is that all of the drilling companies and the service companies that support drilling are maxxed out right now as far as equipment and personel are concerned. If they opened up all of these offlimit areas to drilling, today, there is presently not enough drilling rigs, service personel, and such to do much about it. This is a long term solution, not an immediate answer. In my thinking it would be harmful rather than helpfull to anyone to demand they drill more. Thay are drilling as fast as they possibly can right now. It takes three or four years just to build a new deepwater drilling rig at a cost of around half a billion dollars. The major oil companies don't own drilling rigs, they hire them.---Pooch

So just because it could take years to build a rig and hire more people to drill we shouldn't do it? If our past Presidents would have done what they should have we wouldn't be in this mess right now. They have all used the excuse that it would take years to correct. We all understand and accept that, but someone has to finally start. I don't expect prices to drop to $2 overnight, but I would like them to drop sometime in the near future. They all just need to stop talking and finally do something. That is what is pissing off most Americans, the lack of any action at all.

You mean they should get busy dropping their profits to help us out? I see that happening. I'm telling you, the only thing that will drop prices is a drop in demand. Thats up to us not them. You guys want your cake and to eat it too. Money is what motivates them, not the possibility of helping you and your family out. They could care less about you aside from your gas buying characteristics. It's capitolism, a true free society...Government regulation is the opposite of a free society.

This guy won't drill, not even if gas hits $10 per gallon. Do yourself a favor and watch this (less than 2 minutes) video:

No, an increase in supply will also cause prices to drop. As crappiefarmer pointed out above, even the threat of increased supply brought prices down.

I dont see anything that makes me believe more drilling will help. Oil prices fell over $20 a barrel last week and the price of gas barely flinched. They will charge what they want until we say enough. No one made Nike charge less for air jordans when they started making them with child labor in thrid world countries and no one can make these guys charge less either. I think there should be a government study on what makes them think 20 oz. of water is worth $1.50 but guess what, idiots are willing to pay it so they continue to charge that for it. I'm not being stupid , I know gas is something we MUST have according to most, and that is what drives most public sentiment for a government step in. Mark my words, thats not what you want in reality. You want oil, solar, hydrogen, ethanol, and every other type of energy competing for our business. That will drive the prices of all of them down through competition.
