    Default Boat registration.

Quick question, im looking at buying a boat out of texas. The only problem is that the registration is out of date. Can i go ahead and register it in louisiana or does the current owner have to get it current? What do i need to do?

I don't think that matters.....just be sure that the seller has a valid title in their name and get the sale notarized.....have the seller break the sale down in to two parts.....(1) the boat and motor.....and (2) the trailor.....you have to go to the Louisiana Dept Of Revenue & pay sale taxes (I believe on the trailer only)......then take that proof of taxes paid to the Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries to register it......they will then assign you new numbers to put on your boat....take the Texas numbers off & replace them with Louisiana numbers.....I bought my boat new in Missouri in 2007 and brought it to Louisiana.... this is what I seem to remember....It's a pain in the butt....

I went through this 3 yrs ago. You have to go to the La. Dept Of Revenue to pay State tax, Then on to your parish tax assesor to pay Local tax, then Wildlife and Fisheries for registration. Next stop is the OMV for plates for the trailer. It's a screwed up process to say the least.

Bruce, I think you have to pay tax on all if it is purchased from another state. Only on the trailer if it was bought in Louisiana.

    Default Boat registration.

I would get separate notarized bills of sale. Boat, motor and trailer. Bought a used boat and needed them all separate. I did it the way it was done back in the day and had go go back and redo the paper work. No fun.
