    Default Lake Okeechobee info

Thinking of taking the wife to lake Okeechobee for a week in April. Probably fish bass, crappie and one of my favorites shell crackers. What part of the lake would you recommend. Wife would rather be on the east side closer to the beach, but open to any parts. I want lots of lilly pads and grass instead of a lot of open water. I know several of you have been. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Clewiston is a good area to camp or stay. Marinas there for baits, fuel or whatever. The lake is surrounded by rim canal with lots of lilly pads. The lake is like a flooded soybean field lots of vegetation. Your trolling motor will get hung up and most likely burn up. The lake is very shallow and the wind will blow all the water to one side at times. You can get stuck out there. Never crappie fished always bass. Great place to fish endless grass, buggy whips and open water to fish. I don’t know if you can troll as we do here there’s just too much to get hung on. You will enjoy it and personal best are there for sure.

The big "O" can be tough! I fished there a couple times a month until I moved to NC. This time of year during the day find scattered lilly pads with no hydrilla in 3 to 6 feet of water and dip minnows under a slip cork. Right before dark pull up to pencil reeds/buggy whips put out a spread of minnows and sit there. They will show up in waves. If the wind is blowing on the big lake hit the rim canal with a cage full of crickets, dip the lillys and load the boat with shellcracker, oscars and tilapia. Cant go wrong with the Clewiston area. If you drive down hwy 27 stop at the Wild Turkey Tavern in Avon Park, tell the manage Nicole I said hello, get the gator tail with fried taters and onions...Thank me later. Cheers and good luck, Matt
