My Father bought a used boat a couple of months ago and the Wildlife Registration department was a big help. We found the boat on Craigslist, which made us all suspicious because of all the things you read about. There was a picture of the boat and from that picture I was able to get the NC registration number. I called Wildlife and gave them the registration. The guy gave me the name and address of the owner as on the title. I also did an online search of the Voter Registration database and an online search of the tax database from the county this individual lived in. Everything matched perfectly.
We then knew we had a legitimate seller and proceeded with the purchase. The Wildlife Registration officer said they are allowed to give out name and address because of situations just like what we were going experiencing. As stated by previous individuals, do your homework and that should include contacting the Wildlife Department.

It can be a pain because folks don't want to deal with it after the sale. I had to threaten to call the SHP one time because a guy sold me a boat and then couldn't produce the paperwork on the trailer. After a little coaxing he got with the previous owner and made it right.
