    Default new depthfinder

Looking at getting a new depthfinder. Probably a HB with SI. Questions are ... which model do most on the board use (have terrova I-pilot)? Do you have transducer mounted to trolling motor or transom? Have read the US2 will not work with SI so will not be using or can you use both? I have found a thread on here that shows how to mount to trolling motor, just wondering how much does movement of motor affect imaging.

    Thanks Grant

I have a 899 on the console with an 859 on the bow. They are networked to share forward and rear transducers, likewise share waypoints, i-tracks and such. I have a Terrova also, and had to use a separate transducer than the US2 so it would function correctly. Its a great system when all components are linked together. The only drawback is HB does not have the lakes in Lakemaster that I use frequently, so the follow the contour feature does not work. Other than that, its great! Hopefully this helps.

I have had an 898 SI for several years. I tried the si on the trolling motor but didn't have much success with reading the graph at trolling motor speeds. It's a wonderful thing mounted on the transom and used while running the outboard. Keep in mind that my units are several years old, and I suspect that they are way out of date compared to the units on the market today. There have also been many, many software updates provided by Humminbird which I have not tried.

My experience is that SI works best when moving in a straight line and using the gas motor in low speed. I can lay down a beam pattern with an almost picture-perfect view of the underwater structure and see if there are fish present. Any kind of turn means re-orienting the sonar beams, which can create problems when using the trolling motor. I'm constantly working my trolling motor from side-to-side, so it would not give me a consistent SI reading on my screen.

SI is great for finding an area where I want to fish and then DI is best for when I am fishing, except in shallow water. If you can do as JOCO states above and network, that would work well. SI helped me catch fish yesterday because the crappie are moving to pre-spawn areas. I found an area that lit up on the SI, but is was the DI that told me what depth I needed to fish.

I agree the SI works best on the transom and the DI works best on the trolling motor. If I could only have one unit I would pick the DI. Both units are great tools. I have the older HB799 and HB798 units. Having said that bigger is better. If you can afford an 800 or 900 series then by all means purchase the biggest screen you can afford.
