Default Tillery is hot action forr big crappie!!!!!

Being a new member of this fine site, I thought I would give you the " whats
    up" here on Lake Tillery.
Since I have retired several years ago, I have done nothihng but fish here on the lake about three to four days a week for Crappie. I am the only one around here with a 20jvx Carolina Skiff. So if you see me on the lake, please be sure to say hello.
The Crappie fishing on Lake Tillery has really been hot, this year. With near state record White Crappie being caught. I myself caught one over 3 lbs. and thought I had hooked mister Catfish, but was grossly mistaken.

Using a good depthfinder, and a Riptide trolling motor, with a few rods and
Acid Rain jigheads and 4 pd test, you can get your creel in about three hours.
I troll with four rods, two five footers out the back and two seven footers out the side of the boat at normally between .5 and .7 mph.
After the spawn the larger fish return to the main part of the lake, and at that time I troll at .8 mph . The bigger Crappies are in the 20 ft area and
are vicious in striking a fast moving jig in the 1/16 oz. size. Chartreusse painted head with a little green works well for me.

Last week May 5th through the 11th, I caught 158 crappie over 10 inches long, I caught 37 on the 12th and my friend and I caught 57 and turned back 17 under 10 inches, and only kept the legal limit, leaving some for seed.

Mostly the Larger fish are along the main parts of the lake an cove openings above 15 ft in depth, holding from 11 to 16 ft. Especially the windward side of the lake. Watch the wind, hold the right depth and maintain the right trolling speed and you will fill your boat. Mornings just before sunrise, and late evenings between 530 and dark are the best times for me.

Hope this helps anyone looking for some info.
And say hello if you see me on the lake. I monitor uhf channel 68 and my
call is "BIG JOHN". Good luck and all the best. Be Safe out there.

Welcome to the site from Sanford. I have fished Tillery for stripers and catfish right much in years gone by and had a ball every time I went... but never for crappies. It does seem like, however, most of the crappie reports that you read from Tillery in the last years... most are poor mouthin' about not being able to find many of any size throughout much of the year. Thanks for the report.

Welcome from Clemmons. Appreciate the report. Never been to Tillery. How deep is it? I've fished Badin and High Rock.

tillery has always been a good crappie as far as size! but yes some times they are hard to find sometimes when your not rigged up for trolling after the spawn... and yes it is something special about that acid rain and john deere green on tillery...!!!
