Since the trolling thing for crappies is not my thing, I was wondering if there are any places to go out for bluegills this time of year? I was hoping to find a website dedicated solely to bluegills like this site is for crappie, but to no avail.
I think there's one called Bluegilltalk. You have to be registered to view the forum, I've registered but haven't been able to log on yet.
I used to fish bluegills all year long, wax worms seemed to work great for me in the Winter and early Spring. Small meal worms work great too but best for me in the Spring and Summer months. Wax worms and meal worms are hard to find here in NC cause bait and tackle shops don't normally stock them but crickets are another option. I usually get my wax worms and meal worms from pet stores. As a kid, I used red worms religiously and my dad has always outfished me with meal worms though. When I didn't have neither meal worms, wax worms or red worms, I would be using small pieces of shrimp or cut up minnows. I've also noticed that small baits seemed to work very well if you are targeting bluegills in the winter months.
I believe they will be found under piers, bridge pilings, around rocks and brush this time of the year, I targeted them like I was targeting Crappie, just not sure about the trolling part.... and a majority of my bluegill fishing was done from the bank.
