Speck, I appreciate your view, and I'll step down too.
What would you call the highways we drive on? Should we go back to gravel roads? I bet the goverment spend more of that 55¢ dirctly back to us than Big Oil spent of the 31¢ they make.

I don't doubt they spend it, plus the income tax they collect from big oil, plus the tax they collect on the income I have to make to buy it, plus the money that I try to leave to my children and tax it again when they buy a tank of gas. I will guarantee you though, that they are not as efficient in their expense as private business. I worked in government before I went into the private sector, and the fact that you have no competitors or profit motive makes government the most inefficient service delivery mechanism that exists in this country. My analysis is this - we're a capitalist democracy (thank goodness) and if a guy can't get a 10% return on what he sells, well then it won't be available. Exxon Mobile made a 10 billion dollar profit last year on gas. But they sold 100 billion dollars - that's 10%. I bet that you won't find a smaller profit margin in most manufacturing companies. The government doesn't have one cent in that gallon of oil though. And they also have sales taxes, income taxes, estate taxes, and all sorts of fees that they impose. The end result is that the US government is the largest business and the largest employer on the face of the earth. Their income is over 30 times as big as big oil. Unfortunately, they don't give as much direct benefit as a percentage of income to consumers as the private sector does. That's why I never hear the term "efficient bureaucracy" anywhere. If the politicians really care about us little guys, though, they can roll back some of that 55cent tax, and just cut spending. That's certainly what they expect the consumer to do whenever they raise taxes or fees. How come consumers can cut spending, business can cut spending, but government spending "cuts" just mean a cut in the rate of increase? I've gone on too long here, and I apologize if I've offended anyone, but as a guy who has been a bureacrat, and then went into a competitive industry, I believe that BIG GOVERNMENT is more greedy, and less concerned with the consumer than businesses that have to compete with each other to get the consumer's business. But, I'm sure if they really care about us crappie fishermen, that they will roll back the gas tax (even 40 cents a gallon would help) and just trim the fat out of their programs, just like businessmen have to do every day. Enough about BIG OIL and BIG GOVERNMENT, I'm going to shut up and focus on the next peril to freedom - BIG CRAPPIE. I'm headed to Kansas to try seek revenge on those greedy, shad guzzling, fat cat specks. Good fishing to you all.

I'm in concurrence with DR. He summed it up well.

The only candidate running for president that represents less Government is Ron Paul (Libertarian in Republican Clothing). His record shows it.
Vote for the people that want less Government. Vote for freedom, free market and competition.

Vote for the other Democrats and Republicans and get more of the same.
Believe me, big oil wants any of the other candidates.

OK Guys, I've been part of the Marine Corps(1972-1980) as a Capt. flying F-4s. I know for a fact that the Govnment. does waste allot of money. This is why we need to fire alot of Senators/Congressman/Presidents. Right or wronge, I am a Hawk, I've been wrong before. Our World of ours is really screwed up and I don't have the answer to where we are today. I think that our oil situation goes back to Henery Kissingerr who told the Arabs to charge a lot more for it. Later, Ship

Well said Dr. Jim. We always did see eye to eye. I think we should nominate you for President.

    Default I agree Speckhunter

I too think it's time to tell the greenies where to get off. This ethanol that everyone thinks is going to save the day costs more than crude does. take away the government subsidies and see what we have. The tree huggers are screaming about pollution from drilling but they forget technology has changed from 30 years ago. The politicians won't do anything because the huggers yell loudest, that's because they don't work and have time to go to the rallies, by the way that’s another gov. subsidies.... welfare for the full time protesters. If we start emailing and calling these politicians we could make them change. Remember they are on the side of the people hollering loudest, they want the votes. Anyway I'll get off my box now, sure glad I read this just before church.
