From Garmin web site = Please note the STRIKER does not include any detailed mapping and does not have the ability to add it. That's a big negative for me.
-
Understand that completely but, I don't travel and don't any mapping. going to 65 in June and found out long time ago on cars, boats, tractors, hay equip and just about everything else the more you add on the more stuff to go bad, Really think you can't go to wrong with any of them they all have been around for a while. Good luck with whatever you get
-
Did you check out the Echo series or just the Striker series?
-
The Garmin echo series with sidescan is hundreds of dollars higher. They do have upgradeable maps though.
-
If you decide on the HB, there is a Great Plains card at a good price on the KC Craigslist.
-
It's the old Chevy or Ford debate, they both get you there so you really can't go wrong.
-
Whatever you do get the biggest screen you can afford. The 5 is basically like laying your cell phone on the deck while standing and trying to read a text message.

I have the humminbird 998si with latest mapping setup with Minnkota I-pilot link on my trolling motor. The one thing I'm not impressed with is the mapping some of the topo maps are off on Stockton by up to 10ft. I always ran lowrance before this graph and believe they have better mapping detail for the Midwest, humminbird maps are likely better up north. I looked at the new lowrance elite 7 next to a humminbird helix 7 at bps, the lowrance looked to have better detail for side imaging and down imaging. I believe the new lowrance elites come with the transducer also. The older lowrance hds gen1/2s required the additional transducer and structure scan module. I'm thinking about picking up a lowrance elite 7 for the bow of my boat. Just my 2 cents.

Just checked to see if the lowrance elite 7 TI came with transducer. Yep, totalscan model comes with all-in-one transducer. It's a big one though, looks like it's about a foot long

Had both, both work as advertised, I always tell a new buyer, get what your buddies/fishing partners have, make the learning curve a lot easier.
