January 2, 2008 Stockton Lake Fishing Report - OzarkAnglers.Com Forum

This guy fishes stockton 300+ days a year....read his crappie report from Jan. 08. I've caught some nice crappie (by accident) on Stockton walleye fishing in 40 feet of water in the summer.

Hey Beagle man, when you guys are catching fish 35-40 ft down what setup are ya using. I know trying to catch fish 25ft deep its hard for me to get a good hookset, but my stuff is kinda light. I do use sickle hooks and that helps.

I usually eat a sandwich or drink a soda while its falling. That comes out to a case of soda and 3lbs of bologna for a limit.

Guess I'll weigh in on the thermocline. The thermocline is created when two layers of water become thermally so different that they do not mix. In the summer the upper layer of water gets so warm, it will not mix with the lower layer of water. In the winter the opposite occurs where the upper layer gets so cold, it won't mix with the lower layer. The lower layer in both of these seasons will have very little to no oxygen and fish will spend very little time there. Each year and season can be different as to what depth the thermocline becomes established. The number one factor is light penetration. The more light penetration, the deeper the thermocline. This is why Table Rock's thermocline is so much deeper than Smithville's. During cool summers and mild winters there may not be a thermocline at all or only for a few weeks or days. High wind can breakdown a thermocline too. We documented a complete breakdown of a thermocline in just two hours at Pony Express years ago with 30 to 40 mph winds. Normally the thermocline breaks down in the spring and fall when the upper layers warm or cool to closer the temperature of the lower layer. When that happens the lake "turns over" and the two layers mix. Given that it's been one windy winter so far, I'm not surprised thermoclines haven't become established. It's also been a dry season so far and the lakes are probably much clearer than usual. Hope this doesn't muddy the water:-).

Thanks again, Jake. Always good reading your posts! Haven't seen you on here much. Hope things are going well for you. Did your son come home for Christmas? I know it was no fun sending him off to college.

Thanks Joedog, he's been home since Dec 10 and heads back on Friday. He was ready to go off to school and we've been pleased with how he's done out on his own. He did well his first semester and finished with a 3.4 GPA! I've been busy closing and moving offices and taking leave. Haven't even had a chance to wet a line since October :-(.
