Get the GPS, thank me now or later, either is ok!!
I would love to see everyone's opinion on what depthfinder is good for crappie fishing. I have always been the cheapo that used the least expensive fish finder I could find but am seriously debating getting a down imagage like the lowrance elite 4(i can get it for like $160). I dont need SI but am debating whether I could get gps or not. Just don't want to have buyer's remorse.
Well, MacPappy .... I was in your shoes for decades, and now that I have a Down Image unit, I can't stand to have to look at a Broadband 2d sonar screen.
Watch the Personal Classifieds forum ... there are various units coming up for sale on there, now & then. That's where I got my Lowrance Elite 5DSI unit + some extra accessories (valued at around $700 total) for $475.
If you'll be fishing anything but small, familiar waters ... I recommend getting a unit with GPS capability.
All three major brands (Humminbird/Lowrance/Garmin) have units in your price range ... so you just need to take a peek at their websites and see which one fits the bill for your purposes. Then I'd contact Brian@BBGMarine and see if he can beat any deal you come across, once you find the right unit for you.
Good luck with whatever unit you finally decide on !!

what Reese said--IMO Gps (that will take a card) is number one. Everything else is gravy.
I did the same thing as you for years. Finally broke down and got a good unit with GPS and second trip saved my bacon in the fog on Pickwick. Won't leave home without it now. Several good units on sale and Humminbird is introducing the new Helix units shortly that seem to be really nice at a great price point. Check with Brian at BBG Marine for help on a unit and great pricing.
Make sure you get the right transducer. Some of the cheaper units only come with the 2D sonar transducer. In the elite 4, you'll need the 83/200/455/800 kHz transducer to have DI.
I will have to add that" chart plotter "will be on my next one regardless of what else it has .![]()
