Never recall seeing the thermocline that deep on Sardis.
I saw a Lowrance down scan screen shot very similar to this on another site the other day, and it was explained that it is bottom disturbance created by a school of feeding fish. I'd say you have your unit set up pretty good with it showing sediment like that.

If it is sediment could be because of the current where you were. With them pulling water like they are going to be more current near the bottom and close to the channel.
