I use cheap line for backing and spider wire braid #20 hi vis. It holds its color well and is really strong.

Thanks guys. I already a big spool of the viscous hi vis in 10lb so I will start with that. I guess if I break off too many cranks I will upgrade to the braid. Is anyone having any luck pulling cranks on the big four yet? Is it too early or do you have to wait for the thermocline to set in?

I'll be pulling at Sardis tomarow. A few weeks ago we caught a lot of fish but they were all 11" to 12". Had fun though.

I agree........I like the mono, I would rather lose a crankbait than break a rod anyday. The Cabelas Pro-Line in high vis yellow is good also......about the same prices as the Mr. Crappie or Crappie Max line.

Ifn ya set the drag properly, you won't ever break a rod. I let my drag off and use the line clicker. Just enough drag to keep the bait from running line out.

Right Bill.....But if you set the drag tight so you can keep on running with the braid and pull the hooks out if you get hung up like you guys are talking about.....you run the risk of breaking a pole. I will stick with loose set drag and 10 lb. mono

G, I don't try to pull the hook loose with a bend in the rod. I point the rod tip straight and the bait and let the TM do the work, no worry about breaking a rod.
