Biggest issue is carbon build up, which is more often than not, the cause of unexpected and untimely kablooeys from rings sticking. To fight this, use as clean of fuel as availabe and as good of oil as you can afford plus a fuel additive of your choice. Something like Ringfree or Seafoam on a regular basis - regular for me is in every drop run through it.

Plugs - check and clean them at least twice a year and carry spares. Some motors are worse about fouling plug than others.

Lower Unit - and this is with any motor - trolling puts a lot of hours on a motor quick - you probably ought to go to twice a year change out rather than just once a year.

Impeller - at low speed, you don't have the force of the water to help keep your motor cool. Make sure it's in tip top condition before you troll a bunch with it.

Blow out - It's a good idea to open the motor up after a long day of trolling just to help blow out any carbon that might have built up that day. Trolling right up to the ramp and shutting down won't automatically blow your motor up, but it certainly isn't good to let it stay in there until the next trip.

Has anyone ever intentionally tuned their crankbaits to run off sideways to gain separation?

Most use different length rods or planer boards to get seperation. I use different length rods.

Your welcome Mr. Barkley. Heck, I feel so good about myself now, I'm gonna answer for Yikess while I'm at it.

Here's what Yikess uses and the best price I can find on the net for 'em to boot.

You'll need a right board and a left or multiples. You may also want the tattle flag kit.

I bought some on his recommendation, but haven't used them yet.

Tuning the crank will probably be good for about 1 to 2 foot or seperation, but it's very easy to get it so out of sync that it rolls easily. Plus, you'll need some way of remebering which is tuned left and which is right and with is true. Big mess. Different length rods and planers would be a better deal overall.

A lot like the old Wannabe... except with fewer bad words. And Karate chop action. But, yes, still purtier than you.
