    Default Shallow water gills

Took a half day off from work today to do a little gill fishing. We headed over to Morrison Lake in Ionia county. Our exploratory trip down the length of the lake failed to locate any schools of suspended fish so we headed shallow. We worked the east end and part of the south side where we usually find fish but after an hour of pitching red worms around the docks we had 3 fish in the box. Another pass down the east shore produced one more keeper. Next we hit the north shore and were picking up a fish now and then but nothing fast and furious. We finally found a section of shore that had a lot of fish tight to the seawall. The water they were in was less than two feet deep and the fish were right below the surface. The only way they would bite is with the bait about 6" below the bobber and setting perfectly still, no movement at all. We left the water about 6:30 with 22 decent gills in the box, all 7 1/2-8 1/2 and lots of 7" fish that we threw back. Caught a bunch of small gills too and maybe a dozen bass. To top off a good day, shortly after I got home my brother stopped over with a half a onion bag of morals he found today. I see fillets and shrooms in my future. Water temp was in the 60 range.

Good report Jerry, glad to see someone catching fish!
I have a friend who lives on that lake, he told me he wasn't having any luck with gills or crappie but caught 30 perch the other day, sounds like now the gills are biting!
I'm gonna give Morrison a try next time I go, I've struck out twice on Jordan.

Had a " Pure Michigan" dinner tonight. Fresh bluegill fillets, fried morels and asparagus fresh from the garden. Life is good!
