Nice report and a good observation about the pier fishing. Probably be a good place to avoid.
I went to fish the Detroit this weekend with my dad and to meet up with Kevin and Rich. We arrived Saturday to find 2 other boats in the marina, this is the first time I have seen this happen. Me and my dad launched around 6 am and headed down to Trenton channel to give it a go.
My boat ended up with 2 on Saturday. Me and my dad both caught one they were 17 and 20 inches long. The first fish of the day that I missed was big.. Measuring my small net that I had with me it was at least 30 inches - bummer! My father will vouch for this at camp if you don't believe me. I wouldn't believe me either. The weather was not too bad but you have to remember I have been steelhead fishing all winter long so we probably have different definitions of bad weather.
I met up with Rich on the water Saturday and picked up another order of Jigs. Good thing I did or I wouldn't have been fishing Sunday. Me and my dad ended up using over 50 stinger hooks in the 20 hours we fished this weekend
Sunday was pretty uneventful, I caught a dink that I tossed back and my dad lost one at the boat. The weather was a lot nicer and in places I didn't even have to run my trolling motor. Ended up losing 4 fish total and landing 3 for the weekend. We saw a loon and a bald eagle on Sunday and spent some time up by calf island watching the different birds. I really wish I had a nice camera for stuff like this but I would probably end up breaking it!
I did catch a clam and a plastic worm tub. At one point my Dad started setting the hook and I noticed a lady in a boat about 100 yards down the river start fighting for her life.. I said to my dad "I think you have someones line that is way down the river." About this time a guy in the boat jumped up and ran over to her and cut her line off. My dad reeled in and I was able to reach down and grab the cut off line and pulled it up and ended up pulling up like 150 yards of line. I'm guessing she was spooled and my dad almost pulled the rod out of her hands.
The new fishing pier they are building after the stacks and before the nature preserve is going to be awesome. Supposedly 100 guys are going to be able to fish from it. Not sure how they are going to be able to vertical jig off the end of it with the current but I am sure they will figure it out. If they think they are going to be casting anything off it they obviously haven't thought this through. If Allegan dam has taught me anything its that this many guys crammed into a small space leads to many fights.
I am going to look at my work calendar and take the end of next week off I think. Judging by the weather reports things will be crazy. Heres to hoping I can get some more jigs from Rich
