    Default Gills on the fly

Well just got back from a mad dash w/ sister out to Norfolk, NE for a relative funeral. Left on Tues. back late last night...almost early this morn. Took the week off and just had to get my fix so I hooked up and tried Duck Lake in Allegan Co.

Played with the new SI sonar for an hour and then looked for the fish in the shallows. Tried several diff. techniques, and only got a couple bumps. Just before I was going to call it a day, I ran back to a spot where I'd marked a good bunch of fish in 8-10 FOW. This spot was just off the lilly pads at the east end of the lake. Out came the fly rod and the ticket was a black knat on a #14 hook. Small for the gills little mouths. Had to watch the line as the bite was light.

Kept a dozen of the nicer ones. One speck in the mess also. Most went 8-10 inches and fought like the dickens. The fly had to drop before they would hit.

It is not about the equipment you have to use,
It is about how you use the equipment you have. :D

    Nice catch YD.
I've been out on White Lake the last two days and have managed to catch one lousy bass. Nice one though.
I have thrown just about every jig I own at the crappie but I can't find them. I've been fishing the north end inside the narrows from shallow water to 15 feet and aren't even marking any.
Normally I can at least find some stagging off the breaks. Even tried Slab's Slab Sauce and Liquid Minnow he was so gracious to send out. I still have to comment on his lure but I don't want to be negative about it. I'm sure it's not the fault of bait.

Oh yes, I've managed to break one rod just below the farrow and burn up one electric anchor so far.

Default Don't feel too bad Mike...

I haven't exactly been fillin' the box this spring. We all are gonna have to take some lessons from Frank. Most of the gills I kept we females w/ eggs yet. Water temps were 60-63, so I think that the spawn should be on any day around here. I have been targeting the shallow exclusively. I haven't even broke out my new 12' pinnacle rods yet.

Hey what are you doin' May 8?

    Don

The water temp on White is still only 55 degrees so there's still time yet.

May 8th, not really sure. I'd love to make the outing but I'm not too sure about it. Sounds like a great time though.

I know this is a crappie site, but doggone it, you just can't beat big blugills on a flyrod for excitement. I've got a grandson who is chomping to learn how to use a flyrod, and this is the year. And one more thing....IMHO bluegills are better eating than crappies. Nice catch Don.
