    Default TC-W3 2008 Oil Certificates (2 stroke)

    NMMA - 2008 TCW3 CERTIFIED OILS

I have heard different times, people asking if they could run this or that type of oil in a boat. Is this a good oil and whatever.

This link is for the 2008 Oil Certification by the NMMA. If your oil is on it...or you see a oil you can get that is cheaper than what you are currently using, and its on this list, you are okay to use it.

If it does not appear on this list...stay away from it. These are the people that certify the oil as a TCW3 certified oil...most if not all 2stroke outboards require this. You will also see what company manufactures the oil you use.

    Just some FYI

You can also find boat, trailer, etc...certificates on the same page.

I will post the 2009 as soon as I see it up.

    Scrapper,
Thanks for posting this link. I opened it and looked over it; however, I did not see anything Johnson/E-Rude related. Either I overlooked it, didn't know what I was looking for, or it wasn't there.

Please let me know which it is.

    Thanks Again,
    Howard V.

    Default Oil question

I have a 2004 Yamaha 200 oil and fuel injected motor. Do you think it is okay to run oil other that Yamalube in it?

As long as its certified tc-w3 its fine...oils will be on it one year and not the next...I'm not for sure myself who certifies the oils tc-w3 if not the NMMA...you'll see on alot containers the letters NMMA. I think I'll try to see why that is. I know the supertech oil has been on and off it a few times...the oil from walmart.

Hawgdog....yes it is...but I'm kind of a stickler to not changing oils..thats just my opinion...My johnson has run on johnson oil...so thats what I keep in it. But I know its okay to run other tc-w3 oils. The main thing is it meets the standards that are set by the manufacturer. Just like the difference in castrol, pennzoil, chevron, rotella...just who puts it in the can.

I have always heard of TC-W3 oil..and the NMMA...but never really read into it much. The TC-W3 is a registered trademark of the NMMA. The oils are rated on "performance" testing...meaning the tests are performed on actual outboards running for specified times and then inspected. I looked around their site and found some PDF files explaining the procedures used and how the oils are rated. I have also found as you all probably know...oil can sit on a shelf for a long time before being bought. If the oil is not on the 2008 list...and it says its NMMA certified...its probably an 07 model or something. Also...manufactuers can get away with things by stating that it meets certain standards...it may not be certified by the NMMA...for whatever reason...but it still may say it meets TC-W3 standards, and not be certified by the NMMA. Just some Food 4 Thot.

    Here are the links.

    http://www.nmma.org/certification/lo...ovalSystem.pdf

    http://www.nmma.org/certification/lo...anual-4-08.pdf

After reading this a little more in depth....DANG...they really are stringent on the oil they are testing...makes me want to make sure my oil has the NMMA stamp on it. lol. Hope this helps someone out. It will really make you think whatever the case next time you are looking at oils.

Just wondering if anybody here is skeptical of Pennzoil XLF Marine 2 Cycle oil since it is a synthetic? It's on the list that Scrapper posted. I've never used it, but BPS has it for $11.94.......reg $19.99 a gallon. I've been using Mercury Quicksilver for the most part, but just was wonderin??

By the way Scrapper, this is a handy thread with the cert. list. Don't want to clutter the front page up with stickies, but this one would be a handy one.

All the Pennzoil I have used said TC-3 symbol on it, in my book if it says pennzoil it is good as gold. Have used pennzoil products on & off mostly on for over 50 years, great stuff.
