Should be plenty of power depending on how much you load it. But in most cases think you would be happy with it.
what are opinions of a 20 Tohatsu to power a 1540 Alumacraft jon?

It will be fine, great motors!
Gota agre...years ago ,,Had 16f polarcraft w/20 Chrysler tiller steer Performed well..run in low 20s..Wasn't best motor back then but it was good to me...
I have a 25hp Tohatsu on a 1542 WarEagle with all accessories. Runs and handles great.
Lot of guys running them around here and have good things to say about them. Very light, especially compared to the 25 Tohatsu, and very quiet. I've seen guys with them running them on pretty heavy Weldbuit boats and they jump on plan and look to be running in the low 20's.
You can by the 20 hp Tohatsu online at Outboard Motors | Tohatsu, Suzuki, Mercury, Evinrude & Honda Outboards – OnlineOutboards.com also. I’ve bought a couple of 9.9’s from them. Fast, dependable people..
