Default Missing part of thread on oil tank lid

It seems like it's one thing after another. Now I noticed yesterday that the thread on my oil reservoir has about an inch of the very top thread broken (plastic)-where the oil cap screws onto the tank. When I tilt my motor all the way up it begins to leak out of the lid. Please tell me there is a cheaper fix than a $200 replacement tank? I'm trying to add a pic but it won't let me.

Well it did let me add it. Notice the missing section of thread at about the 5:00 position? What is the fix here?

Don't tilt it all the way up, or don't fill it full is the cheapest way out ... IMHO.

(mine will also leak when tilted fully up, so this is my "cheap fix", plus carrying a gallon jug of oil in the boat)

check the seal inside the cap, I'd think that if the lid was screwed down tight and the seal is good then the oil wouldn't get past the lip of the can, but that's just me

I put Teflon tape on it yesterday evening and it seemed to stop the leak. I guess time will tell though. I'm going to keep an eye on it and make sure I don't fill it all the way up from now on. Thanks for all the replies/advice. Wasn't going to be a cheap fix if tank had to be replaced-$90 for new tank and up to $150 for labor!!

Hello: Don't know if it would work but could you use a hot glue gun to fill in the missing plastic and shape it to fit . What about a plastic welder ? Good Luck . O - R

Go to a local hardware store and buy some two part plastic epoxy, clean the threads with carb cleaner, and mix the epoxy and try to rebuild the thread, using a small file to shape the epoxy after it hardens
