    Default Frozen tilt/trim pitson pin-help

    I could use some suggestions.
I have a 1995 Evinrude 40 hp tiller motor. This motor has a manual tilt with a hydraulic assist piston. I got the bottom pin out no problem. Top pin hasn't budged.
Sprayed it with PB Blaster, tried heat, pounded on it with a 10 pound sledge and nothing. The owners manual shows a cotter pin to remove and slide the pin out. No cotter pin to remove. I did find thread in one end of the pin after I managed to clean all of the gunk out of the hole. Screwed in a bolt, which promptly snapped the head off once it hit resistance. Now I have to get that broken bolt out, and still have to get the pin out.

    Ideas?

If you could get the bolt out, maybe try a slide hammer similar to whats used to pull dents, or and air hammer punch. ????

I did some research and it appears there is a slide hammer adapter specific for this pin. I don't care about the pin that is in there now, I have a replacement. I may just whack off the stbrd side and try to punch it through the opposite way. Got a machinist friend coming up tomorrow night to give me a hand.

If there are threads in one side. Might be possible that the pin might be threaded and needs to be unscrewed ?? Just a thought.

Have you removed the cross pin that locks it in?
    I'd rather be fishing.

First thing I looked for was the cross pin, no cross pin installed. Thanks for asking, sometimes we miss the obvious stuff.

Well, update. I managed to get the old pin out, in three pieces. Long story short, We cut off the starboard side collar so we could drive the pin toward the port side. Port side has a bracket preventing the pin from coming out that side and preventing you from driving the pin out on the starboard side. Hence the reason for the slide hammer to remove the pin. Drove what we could and cut it off, removed piston and drove pin back to the center cut it off again, and drove the rest out toward the port side. 3 hours later and the pin is out. I have metal/oil shavings all over the place.

Sounds real simple and is in concept. However there is one great big bracket this pin is hiding under. We bent the snot out of our sawzall blades continuously. It was real tight clearance under there and a real PITA.

One observation. The replacement hydraulic piston is fully extended, my old unit is fully compressed. This is a manual tilt motor, in other words I was not only lifting the motor, I was also lifting against the force of the piston. Explains why it was so hard to lift, there was no assist left in the hydraulic assist piston. It was 100% resistance.
