Default Folding Trailer tongue - replace pin with bolts

I store my boat in the driveway and have no need to swing tongue out of the way other than maybe preventing theft. I don't like the sag in tongue and thought just bolting thing together would help with sag.

I replaced the pin with two grade 5 bolts to match two on pivot side. Anyone see an issue with that?

    Just checking for safety reasons.

    I'd use grade 8 hardware.

Take those bolts to a truck supply place or truck dealership. Get you 2 grade 10 frame bolts, nuts and washers. Best thing is have smooth shank of bolt just at out side of bottom hole. Going to be more stress on that set up than it looks.

Guys, You have made me nervous. I will see if I can at least find Grade 8 tomorrow. Have a Caterpillar place up the road and will swing by a Ford dealership

I may go with what I got (or back to original setup?) if I can't find at least Grade 8 in correct size. I reason this because I have been pulling this boat for three years with 2 grade 5 bolts and a pin(not sure what it is rated at). Would think 4 Grade 5 bolts would be better than 2 grade 5 bolts and a pin.

Going to Louisiana to do a little fishing and leaving Tuesday to start my trek there.

    5/8"-18 Grade 5(left) vs Grade8(right)

With 4 bolts, would think it would give me ~92K lb tension capacity and ~75k lb shear capacity. Boat and trailer less than 2000 lb ( I calculated ~1700 lb for boat, motor and other stuff).

    Thoughts?

Hello: Grade 5 bolts and nuts should work great for you. A lot of farm equipment , plows ,disks what have you I've pulled with tractors have grade 5 bolts. Yes some do break but under a lot more strain and stress than pulling a trailer down the road. If you can torque the bolts with a torque wrench then you should be good. Just check them occasionally. I'll bet your original pin was a grade 5 or less. Good Luck . O - R

It's only as strong as the weakest link. In other words, you cannot add up the tension for each bolt. The tension is only as strong as the weakest bolt. Once it fails, the tension it was holding is now transferred to the other bolts.

Curious as to why you didn't just replace the tongue?

Grade 5 bolts would be my pick for this application, they will stretch and give before they break. The grade 8 do not stretch they will snap when they fail. Put the same bolt the trailer manufacturer used....which I believe you said was grade 5.
