    Default gear or foot issue

    1989 johnson J50TLCEC
Ran fine today till we goosed it to load on trailer. Heard a metal sound. killed engine and continued to load the boat. Called my mechanic and he said clutch dog. I checked linkage, and gear oil and everything looked fine. There was metal shavings on the foot drain plug. Any opinions or guesses on cost and if I messed anything else up.
    Thanks

I left out that in neutral the prop will not free spin. It turns about one turn each way and stops.

More info needed to form an opinion of what might or could have happened.
    I'd rather be fishing.

It could be anything and until you get inside there really is no way to really know. Cost really depends on who is to fix it and how much they charge(parts and labor). Not trying to scare you but you do know what the word BOAT stands for  B break O out A another T thousand. Just joking. Hope you
good luck with the motor maybe it is just the clutch dog and will not cost you a lot. I replaced one years ago on a 18 hp evinrude myself and bought the part on Ebay pretty cheap. I watched some youtube videos to see how to do it and just did it myself.

foot is back on. Clutch dog was the culprit. Total cost was about $360. Half parts and half labor. Bought a seal kit and a new water pump housing kit. Putting it back together and noticed starter is slow to disengage. Can the spring get weak. I have cleaned it pretty well.
