Minn Kota TM mount MKA-16 question
I have mounted the Minn Kota MKA-16 mount for my PD V2 onto the forward deck of my boat. By the nature of how the MK PD is made it hangs over the bow of the boat a bit. The MKA-16’s upper plate is secured to the lower plate by a thumb-head screw through the side of the top plate into the side of the lower plate. If I came in a little too quick and hit a dock with the head of the trolling motor while in the stowed position, the shear force exerted to the screw would be considerable, most likely shearing the screw.
Has anyone ever experienced this? I am sure that at some point I will do this, and came up with a solution.
At the rear of both plates on one side is a through hole for adding a padlock to keep someone from removing the side screw and stealing the TM.
Here is my idea. I plan to not use the side screw and instead insert a plastic screw with a nut to secure it, through the pad lock holes to act as a sacrificial shear pin so if I were to push the motor back it would shear the plastic screw. It would be an easy and inexpensive fix if that were to happen. All I need to do is keep a few plastic screws on board.
Does this sound reasonable?

I use a spring loaded clip where lock goes. Also drilled a hole through top and bottom plate For a pin to push through instead of using threaded screw. If you unload on a steep ramp motor can drop down on winch stand of trailer. With this set up I can slide plate back enough to prevent this from happening. when off trailer slide plate back in place and put pin back in. Takes seconds and eliminates hitting motor on trailer.

I got the pictures and I like the idea of a second position to get the motor back while stowed. I will work something like that on mine - Thanks. While your clip will hold the motor in place during operation I still want something sacrificial to prevent the motor being driven back while stowed (as in approaching a dock too fast) and bending and/or breaking the mount or motor. I will get some plastic bolts and nuts (Lowe's HIW carries them) and try that.

For that exact issue, we prefer to use the below pictured plate instead. It has a "U" shaped handle that goes through two holes. The smaller (middle) plate is mounted to the deck of your boat. The larger plate mounts on your TM. Once the handle is inserted all the way, there is a lug (as shown with a pin) that can can be used with a pad lock.

I have this one also. Makes it a snap to move motor between boats if you have two. The mount pictured above is the RTA-17 and has no provision for sliding backwards in the event of a bumping a dock.

When I had a Terrova and a slide mount I just drilled an extra hole in the side of the mount to secure the motor when I had it slid back. If you look at where the threaded hole is on the base of the mount just slide the motor back and drill a hole to match the threaded hole. Just screw in the thumbscrew in the new hole to hold the motor in the retracted position.
