I had a 22 hp briggs motor that over heated and a valve guide slipped in the head. This caused a pushrod to bend. Motor had good compression in the cylinder, but the bent pushrod wouldn't allow the exhaust valve to open. Hence it backfired through the carb. Not sure if water in the cylinder could do something similar. Is it an easy job to pull the valve cover off and check for a bent pushrod?

It's probably an easy job, but not for me. I'm taking it to a shop tomorrow. I would be just as likely to cause more damage as to help the situation at this point.

Let us know what you find out.......thinking out loud...possible when it shut down that it might have sheared the key in the flywheel and now it wont start because its out of time...thus the back fire.

I dropped off the motor at a shop in Minden this morning. I expect it will be a couple of days before I hear from them. Their initial thoughts were that the woodruff key was probably sheared.

This place that promised to "get right on it" Monday morning said Thursday evening "we'll try to look at it tomorrow". I'm picking it up next Monday morning whether it's fixed or not.

After hearing Friday afternoon, "Ha ha, I'm sorry, we'll try to look at it in the morning." I had enough! I was there before opening time this morning to pick up my motor. Luckily they didn't try to charge me anything. Fifteen minutes after I got home I had determined that the woodruff key was definitely sheared. Monday I'll borrow a wheel puller, replace the key, and see what happens.
