In answering your earlier question, if you disconnect that check valve, expect oil to leak from the tank if full and the feed line to empty back into the remote tank. I guess that was already apparent but I am stating this avoid confusion.

Also, I wasn't completely clear in the above post. The valve should only open if the feed line becomes clogged or pinched. The small tank will need some sort of venting ability in order to allow the oil pump to continue to pull oil.

Thanks to you I think I will be able to isolate the problem. It's church tomorrow and then back to troubleshooting early Monday.
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

    Update on problem!!

I have not been able to diagnose the oil problem. However, apparently somewhere in the past others have had a similar issue. I talked to the local dealer and he informed me that Merc. had made a change to the oil system in that they had put an inline check valve in the oil supply line just ahead of the engine oil tank. I purchased one 57.00 and put it in the line and it does prevent the engine tank from draining back to the tank in the boat.

UNSOLVED PROBLEM-- I randomly get a constant alarm, sometimes for a second or two and then the engine shuts down. The alarm may be as long as 15 seconds before it shuts the engine down. It will however, unless I turn the ignition off, always shut the engine down. NEED HELP BADLY!!!

You are correct in your description. It's not in play at this point if it's not leaking. It's sole purpose is to allow the tank to vent and allow the oil to be pulled from the tank by the oil pump.

When you say constant alarm, are you getting a solid tone or a rapid cycle of the alarm? Also, do you have a voltage gauge on the dash and has there been any weird stuff going on with your tach?

It is a solid tone. It remains that way until the engine shuts down. I do not have a voltage gauge. I think there is in fact some weird stuff going on with the tach. I am pretty sure it jumps erratically. I though that might be because it was going into limp mode. I think it does it more often at lower rpm. I am pretty sure that at times when I am running higher rpm that I have noticed the tach jump.

It sounds like you are having an over voltage problem that is pushing the system into guardian mode. It will leave no active faults on the DDT. I suspect the voltage regulator/rectifier is going out. Hook up a temporary voltage gauge and go to the water. I suspect you will watch voltage climb to 16+vdc just prior to the alarm and shutdown.

    Thanks.
    My internet is down.
If you have time could you send me a clue how to do it.
Could I just hook multimeter to 12vdc at the console. I think your
    Diagnosis sounds very reasonable.

    sliderman-please check your pm.

I just came in from running the motor and it acted really weird this time in that after the engine shut down the fuel pump continued to cycle every few seconds and the alarm was constant even though the engine had shut down. I guess it thought the engine was still running. I did manage to read the voltage at point B on the alternator and thru all this mess it remained constant at 14.5. I am beginning to think it is electrical in nature, maybe even the ecm.

I did manage to capture most of the episode on video of my cell phone which I would really like for you to see. I don't know exactly how to make that happen.
