I tried it once in a Merc 150 I had and really couldn't tell any difference.
I have always run Quicksilver oil in my 2 stroke engines. I needed a new supply and checked Walmart to see what they had. (usually buy from my marine dealer). I saw there was a synthetic one which is about $9 more/gallon than the regular type that I normally use. They were out of the regular type so I wanted you guys thoughts on synthetic vs regular 2 cycle oil. I don't have a super horse engine, just a plain old 1999 40HP 2 stroke Yamaha.

Every report I have read in the last ten years or so comparing oils has said, the only reason to run Synthetic oil in a 2 stroke is engines that turn In excess of 6000 rpm's on a consistent basis. As in full out race engines and some of the go fast Bass boat guys. No real benefit in standard every day use. Before I got my 4 stroke I ran the walmart brand oil in 2 different motors for years with no problems at all.

I'm running Pennzoil Marine 2cyc oil in my 1999 90HP Merc, and I ran Wal-mart Super Tech in my 1984 Yamaha 70HP ... no oil related problems from either engine.
I've always understood that as long as you run TC-W3 rated oil ... you shouldn't have any problems.

Pappy is right. Any name brand oil rated TCW3 will work just fine.

Checked back at Walmart (only because I was driving right by it) and they had the regular stuff for $20 a gallon so I am good for a while.

Go 4 stroke and quit worring about mixing that stuff. Mobile 1 in my 4 stroke since day one. :-)

It would have to come from Santa Claus and he told me his back was out and he wasn't lifting anything over 10 lbs.

I still believe in Santa, don't you... I think you're been good this year and deserve one.

I think any TCW-3 is okay for a carb engine. If you have the right oil mix and fuel going to a cylinder and rings are free....your good to go. If you run a cylinder lean from carb or injection problems bad news. Typically a carb engine is less likely to do that than a direct injection, injector goes out and that cylinder is toast. And then of course their are the oil pumps...you have alarms but better keep the fuel flowing. I would rather run a little cheaper oil and have some money for seafoam to add frequently.
Some boat dealers buy it in bulk and package it themselves. Hopefully with the price of oil crashing the price will get better.
Yeap four strokes solve a few problems, but I gave up smoking and drinking.... the smell of 2 stroke exhaust is the only thing I have left from the old days that brings back fond memories.
