i just did that on a 1999 Yamaha 40. They don't have to cut it, the keys are generic. The number on mine is a common one I was told. The parts guy just pulled one out of a bin which had a dozen or more of the same number and it fit just fine. He said one key fits a number of different models. It is a function of the control box, not the motor, so it could cover anything from a 30HP to a 90HP for example.
While I was at it, I also got the rubber boot that comes on new Yamaha keys. It fits over the key and helps keep rain and spay and road grime out of the key slot. Also, I had black rubber all over the key and my hands. I thought the key housing had deteriorated but it was only a tiny rubber cover over the key slot which cost about $2 to replace. Just thought I would pass this along because I thought I was going to have to replace the control box to get rid of the melted rubber issue.
I wanted the boot for the key to help protect this little rubber cap from the sun so it would not melt again in 16 years.LOL

Yep.....they are like tractor keys...if you got the key number or the old key to go by most dealers have them in stock or can order you one.
