Was that the 20 amp fuse under the cowling? What model is the motor? M, ML, EO, ELPTO, etc
2005 40 hp Mercury 2 stroke Oil Injected motor. I disconnected the wires to the battery this morning and put the battery on the charger. As I was hooking the wires back on the battery after charging I accidently touched the largest positive wire to the negative battery terminal. There were no sparks or smoke. I went ahead and connected all the wires and tried to start the motor and it was dead. Nothing works, no power tilt, nothing. I checked the 20 Amp fuse and it was blown. I replaced the fuse and still everything is dead. I know the battery is good. Any idea what I burned up?

Yes, the 20 amp under the cowling. ELPTO I also can hear a very faint whine in the motor when I push the switch on the side of the motor for the power tilt.
I just checked the battery and it is dead. Only shows 10% charged. It showed 90% charged when I took it off the charger this morning. Could it be a bad battery or could I have caused a short In the motor that has now drained the battery?
could be either. try to recharge on a slow charge until completely charged then try it again. shouldn't have to unhook cables to charge, unless something is causing a drain
If it still has a drain on the battery after you charge it I'd be checking the voltage regulators. The don't like reverse polarity.
I took boat to shop this morning and got it back already. Still kinda puzzled though. The battery was completely dead and they found nothing else wrong. Put in a new battery and motor starts, runs and charges like it is supposed to. They said it showed no drain in the electrical system. Still don't know why the fuse was blown. The battery charger showed that the battery was charged yesterday before the reverse polarity screw up but the motor would not turn over and power tilt would not work. Maybe the battery was just so weak it didn't have enough juice to burn out anything. Could the reverse polarity short out the battery and not harm the motor. I guess time will tell, still concerned about the blown fuse. Who knows, maybe I just got lucky. The cost of a new battery is a cheap lesson learned.
I ain't politically correct, so I won't tell you what blew that fuse.

Better count it as you're lucky day and keep a close eye on it.
I have always unplugged the electric into the motor anytime I have dealt with charging, plug back in when done charging and all reconnected. My bigger opti Max does not have a plug sooo, I am so cautious.
