    Default Let's talk trailers

I have a 35 year old utility tilt trailer (5x8). Nothing ever done to it except replace rotten tires with less rotten tires. I decided to resurrect it, so I drug it home. I pressure washed it and it looks good and the bed wood looks good. Tires are dry rotted. I checked the hubs and they are the 5x5 pattern. I was just gonna buy some 15" rim/trie combos, but there are not many options for the 5x5 pattern. I haven't looked at the bearings yet as we have had a flood here. The trailer hasn't been used much over the years. It has been more of a dump ground than a trailer.

Now, should I replace the bearings, or just put new hubs with the 5x4.5 pattern, (which seems to be the common size) and put new combo tire/rims on new hubs?

Max load would be my Ranger 570 which weighs @1270 pounds with gas and goodies.

I know almost as much about trailers as I know about boat engines.

    Thoughts?

Take no chances haulin' a boat. Get them tires and hubs changed. Safety pays dividends.

I would swap the hubs. With that much age, I would rather put new and know what I have..On a side note, I bought a ranger 570 not long ago. I love it. It is suprising how much power that 570 puts out.

Since this trailer hasn't got a lot of miles the bearings could be in good shape. Possibly all they need is repacking. Clean them up to verify condition and if OK then pack with a good wheel bearing grease (from parts store). Use plenty of grease. Be sure to check the seals for dry rot and replace if necessary. IMO bearings don't age but the grease does need replacing from time to time. I you do replace the bearing cones be sure to also get new races as well. Good luck with the project.

I'm in the camp with the others that I would change out the hubs and go with new bearings. Make sure the spindles aren't pitted where the old bearing have been sitting too. Just my Tom.

Replace the Hub assy. Doubt you will find anything but used wheels in the old pattern. Pull the old hub and make sure you can find one that has proper sized inner and outer bearing to fit your axle. Also make sure new one has the right seal to fit your axle.
