    Default Hit a stump

I was driving in to a cove today and I hit a stump I wasn't going very fast but the motor kicked up and will not go forward or reverse. All the motor does is rev up. Is this something that can be fixed easy and cheap or is this an expenive fix? I pulled the propeller when i got home and the splines look good It is a 1978 evinrude 25 hp tiller steer

Just a shear pin most likely, take the prop off. On the flat in of the prop that goes on the motor first there should be a slot, also a slot on the washer on the shaft with a hole in the main shaft. Might have to bump a piece out of the main shaft, get a pin, replace, put the prop on and go to town. Hope its that simple for you.

Old timers use to cut a couple of nails off to size and keep them in their tackle box to replace the pin when they broke it on a stump.

No shear pin on that motor. You probably spun the hub. A prop shop can rehub it for you and make the prop look like new.

Wow me too, Rees. I had a 1974 Johnson 40HP and it had a shear pin. I did not think they went to slip hubs until around 80 or so.

I always carried pieces of cut off brazing rod for shear pins. They will run the prop just fine, but will shear when hit.

well I cant seem to locate any kind of shear pin. I am afraid that my troubles are more than a shear pin. I don't have a repair manual does anyone know where I can get one?

Can you post a pic. Of not only the shaft but the back side of the prop as well? This would help us put you in the right direction. Wrong time of year to break down
