    That hole in the pic is a weep hole that is directly related to the driveshaft / water pump area, the other weep hole that is not in your pic/ on the other side of the lower unit is for the shift rod / o-ring in the pic some one else posted. I would remove the lower unit, replace the drive shaft seals under the water pump and make sure you replace the o-ring under the drive shaft bearing carrier. If it where mine the lower unit would be getting resealed, cheaper than a new lower unit.

    Thanks guys .. looks like I'll be getting it worked on for sure.. I've got a few ppl to call .. I'm not taking it back to the shop I've used before so I'm calling a few private mechanics .. see what they will charge. I took some pics ..

    New oil that I just put in ..about 30mins of use running in a large bucket with fresh water being pumped in ...

    just to update in case someone down the line has the same problem. i tilted the motor back down and it doesnt leak anymore.. odd

    Well you know its not really leaking from those holes its really leaking from up top where the seal is located and running down. As the gear oil leaks and the shaft spins it slings a small amont of gear oil in the lower end water cavity and when you let down it runs out of the cavity out of those holes. And wont leak until driven again. the tech that presure tested it told me that there is pressure being created while its driven that forces the gear oil out and after you stop it pulls water in.
    Although I did not do the repair itself I did remove and replace the lower end and impeller down to the seal and this is what I saw. I hope that helps.
