You didnt accidentaly hit the kill switch?
Have a 1980 80 hp mercury. Ran great that morning but when I left to go to another spot, it would not fire a lick. Pulled out, checked plugs, no fire. Only thing I can see between the starter and the plugs is the power pack. Do they go out without any signs of them doing so or am I looking in the wrong direction?

I have a 1994 merc 40hp and the stator went out on mine....no fire (twice)
Mercury calls them a switchbox. Find the black/yellow wire going to it and disconnect it then recheck for spark. If you now have spark there is a problem with the kill circuit. If still no spark then it can be the switchbox or the stator. I can look up static tests for the stator but there are none for the switchbox.

Mercury's ignition is bad...about 75 % of the time no fire on any cylinder is the stator, but the trigger can influence it also, and both are under the flywheel and both has a simple test with an ohmn meter. I can't remember off the top of my head but it is readings thru the primary wires from stator and trigger to the switch box, not the yellow charging circut wires. The odds of no fire at all and a swich box being the problem is rare, and if the stator is original it may take an update kit with a red stator as quite a few old ones aren't avalible from the original vendor that made them for Mercury. CDI Electronics makes aftermarket parts that I have had very good luck with , but just throwing parts at it with out finding the problem will get very expensive VERY fast.

archerguy1, what is the possibally that the stater could foul out the power pack also. Talked to a mechanic and he said that it is rare but it is possible?
I have never seen a Merc stator take out a switch box , a US Marine Force engine , all the time. Get an ohmn meter and check between blue and blue/white from staor, disconnected from switchbox the blues to ground see what readings you get between blues should read resistance and nothing when to ground.
