ive always ran mine out of gas and i always trim my motor down ive done this for 6 years and never a problem if you run it out of gas and ive never had no carb work done
I've always owned aluminum boats and then about 2 months ago i broke down and bought a 96 nitro fish and ski. The boat really looks like new. Always garage kept and rarely used. Heres my question. He swears to always run the engine out of gas when your done (which is a can of worms itself) and when you get it home and in the garage unstrap the front and back and take the motor toter off and let the motor down. Anyone ever heard of this? He said it takes the stress off the bunks and the boat itself.

fishing from the couch in front of the tv doesnt count
If you have more than 1 carb you are wasting your time. The motor will quit running when it can't get enough gas to run and I'll guarantee you there is still some gas in some of the carbs.

x2 Mr. Bill, I commercial fish out of camden,NC and duck guide in the winter. I have three boats I use all year. The 17 ft stumpknocker has a 50 hp etec 2007 model. This boat is used for duck hunting mostly and then sets for a couple of months from Feb until I get time to crappie fish in the spring. I use the 18ft parker as well for long runs across the sound in currituck during duck season and it sits until Oct when the duck season starts again.I use my 25 ft Parker with a 225 ETEC for commercial fishing all year. I put sea foam in every fill up on all three boats but especialy the 50 etec and the 115 hp four stroke that is on the 18 ft parker only because I know they are going to sit for long periods of time after hunting season.I put STAR TRON Enzyme fuel treatment in all my motors for ethonal issuses, the first dose for each fill up is 1oz for every 8 gallons of gas and 1oz for 16 gallons on refills. This STAR TRON is pricey but is is well worth it in the long run. I haven't had to clean carbs on any of my motors for 4 years. The sea foam works well for break down of water in the gas and the Star Tron for ethonal but can be used for the help of breaking down the water also. Sea Foam runs between $8.00 and $9.00 at WM and the Star Tron $9.00 depends where you get it, NAPA is around $12.00. A small price compaired to a trip to the marine mechanic at $70.00 to $90.00 per hour. Hope this helps and I am going to try and post a picture of these.

If the motor is a 2 stroke, then you are possibly running the engine w/o any oil in the process of running the carbs dry, depending on the type/brand of motor. Have read numerous comments which go both ways. Suggest you use Stabil marine version in your gas as well. I've got a 04 2stroke 60 merc, never run the carbs dry, has sat for extended periods with little use in the past, never had one problem so far. Am I lucky, maybe, but I've always used fuel stabilizer in the tank from day one.
GO BIG ORANGE !
I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.
I was told not to run the motor out of gas. This can cause engine rings problems. Makes your engine run with little or no oil in pistons.

I never run the motor out of gas. But I do lower the motor when i store it. Not sure about the theory of taking stain off the transom, but I do it to drain water out of the lower unit. I have seen a lower unit where water froze in it becuase the motor was stored tilted up. It was not pretty.
Need to define if this motor is fuel injected or carb'd, and 2 or 4 stroke?
Carbs will always have fuel in teh bowl, even when the engire ran out of gas. Fuel injected doesnt have carbs. It runs out of fuel every time you turn it off.
The rule used to be, 2 strokes had the oil mixed in with the gas, so running it out of gas meant running out of oil too. ETecs dont mix gas and oil, they have a seperate oil resivor which pumps oil in as needed.
In short, the general statements aren't always true anymore.

Being a 96 its is probably an EFI. If you run it dry,,,if its not getting fuel,,its not getting oil and you will scrub the cylinder walls. Lower the engine (fully) after it is placed on the trailer at the ramp, let all water drain. If it will be below freezing temps, raise and lower several times, this will get it ready for the wind chills on the road. If stored in a heated garage leave it on the transom saver if possible, if not heated lower it down. Dont worry about any stress on anything. The boat takes the beating on the highway not the garage.
Always use a fuel treatment these days with the crappy fuel that is available to us.
I do loosen the bow strap while it is parked in the garage, just to take the pressure of the strap, not the bow eye. Transom straps dont have the pressure to worry about unless you have the new ratchet straps.
