    Default Here's a good one !!

I have a new 2009 Merc. 30 hp 4 stroke. If you don't keep the oil quite a bit above the full mark, the oil light comes on with a siren type whistle, the motor shakes till you slow it down. I took it to the dealer to have it fixed, still under warranty. It actually calls for oil when it's on the full mark. I changed oil & filter, put the 1.9 qts. in it, went fishing today and had the same problem. Dealer said it might be an oil pressure switch. Ever hear of anything like that??

It sounds like you have some sort of sensor malfunction. Whether it is a oil pressure sensor or an oil level sensor only a look at each one and a function test of each one will solve the problem. My advice, keep on the dealer and document, document, document. After fives attempts at repairs for the same problem, have it declared a lemon and have them give you a replacement model or one better. Michigan has Lemon Laws

Ya, I've been doing business with Rick for 11 years. This is the first time I had to take it to the shop for repair. If I know him, it will be fixed. And if it isn't, I know how to get it taken care of. Had to get a lawyer years back after Mercury, got a new motor out of it. Hope this doesn't go that way...

I look at all the problems people have with motors on this mechanics forum. Mercury is hands down the most talked about motor that people are having troubles with in one way or another. Buy a Yamaha and keep the money for yourself instead of paying a lawyer.
I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask them where they're goin' and hook up with them later.

Got back with my dealer today. Mercury told him to change the water pump, thermostat, he did, and it made no difference. Now they are sending him a temperature switch, and he told me he didn't think that would work. He told Mercury that he wanted a new computer for it and they refused to send him one till he followed all the steps before that. I had a lawyer on the last Mercury I bought and got a new one. Seems like I'm heading down that road again. Never owned a Mercury that I didn't have trouble with...

A friend in FL had bought a new boat with a Yamaha 150. 10 hours on the rig and it spit the powerhead in a big way. Warranty covered it, but they gave him a rebuilt powerhead for his new motor. You can imagine that he wasn't happy about this and went up the chain of command and got no satisfaction. They fixed the motor the way they wanted to and he sold the boat, and will have nothing to do with anything with a Yamaha on it. Makes me wonder how they are these days.

Man Skeet, I wish you wouldn't have told me that one, I was thinking Yamaha for my next motor. They all have their problems, all made in China, Japan, or someplace. Not like the old Johnson or Eveinrudes

And Mercury is, hands down, the most popular outboard on the water, so naturally there's more talk about them.

More Talk for sure but, what I have been reading and hearing over the last couple years. I would not call it good advertisement for Mercury. Seems like a lot of people having to spend some money on things that should have been right in the first place.
