    Default Evinrude Drive Pins

I have a 1970 Evenrude 18 H.P. outboard with the low water we have in Caddo lake some kid or kids decided it would be fun to string a rope acrossed the cove that I launch my boat in. Well I hit the rope spun the hub and bent the drive pin . Got the prop rehubed and bought a new shear pin ( Brass ). Guess you know how long that lasted!!! Now have ordered a bunch of Steel drive pins off the internet but they won't be in for a week would like to go fishing. Question what can I use in the mean time that will hold up untill the new pins arrives. It measures 3/16 inch in diameter or 4.76mm. by 1 inch 3/16. any help will be appreciated.

Will give it a try. just don't want to mess up my motor as it is a oldie but a goodie IMO. a iron one should last longer than that brass pin I was sold. Live and learn!!!

    Thank you

Try a 3/16th drill bit. It's stronger than the nail but it will give under a impact. Just take a cut off wheel and cut to length. Hope this helps. Rollcaster...............................

Thanks guys for all the suggestions Will use a 16 penny nail for the short term. Have bought 6 and have three motors that they will work on. A newer motor would be ok but for some reason I really like running the old iron. I have a 1969 evenrude 18 H.P., 1970 evinrude 18 H.P., a 1973 evinrude 65 H.P.,and the new motor 1975 evinrude 25 H.P. Have almost any part to fix any one of them but no drive pins. First time in 25 years of running outboard that I have went thur a drive pin. And only the second prop that has needed to be rehubed. So you can see that I am sold on the older evinrude motors. They are kind of like a timex watch they take a licking and keep on ticking or running. Again thanks for all the help it is greatly appreciated to get me out on the lake again.

P.S. this 18 hp is on my crappie boat and is my favorite rig.
