Favorite memory crappie fishing.. It was in the spring back in the 70s. My mom went with me in my 14' jonboat 25hp merc. We caught fish all morning. My mom made a man get off his porch to kill a snake in a tree by his dock...She made him like it was his job..lol When we started back to the cabin, I drove out of the creek we were fishing into the main lake. The wind was blowing strong out of the west and we had to go into it. The white caps were rough. My mom sitting up front holding both sides of the boat with water spraying all over the two of us bouncing accross those big waves. I can't remember mom going much after that in my boat.

I went with my parents camping and fishing when I was real young. But the man that hooked me on crappie fishing when I was 13 was Mr. Hardy our neighbor on the backwaters. He took me one morning and I fished with a jig for the first time. It was March so we caught more than I'd ever caught before and this jig stuff was fun. Over the next 2 years Mr. Hardy taught me where the crappie were and what they did year round. I still fish spots that he took me. They still produce fish. I don't know how long before I met him he made these brushpiles but I have added to them over the years so I know some of his piles are now over 30 years old. I would love to show him my bamboo condos. .......Rest his soul.

    All right, here's mine!

    AGE: 64
    Hometown: Florence, Alabama
How many years have you been crappie fishing?: Seriously fishing since I retired 3 years ago. Go at least one day every week. I rarely fished as an adult before. Loved it as a kid.
Favorite memory crappie fishing: My first crappie!
What kind of boat do you have?: 14 Ft. Glasscraft with 50 hp Merc. I bought for $700 and then put another $700 to get it running. My old boat leaks a little and is about 30 years old and it's ugly as all get out, but it gets me out there and back.
Favorite trolling pole: Don't do much trolling, but I'll give it a try one of these days.
Favorite Jig pole: Sam Heaton Signature 12 footer, but I've got others that I like that are in the 6 to 7 foot range.
Favorite casting pole: I've got so many it's hard to say which is the fav.
Favorite Reel: Old Garcia Mitchell 330 spinning reel I've had for decades and several others that are so smooth they make you think of soft butter.
    Favorite bait: minnows and worms
Favorite Jig: No one favorite as long as they've got a splash of pink or red in them
Favorite way to fish: Tightline with jigs and casting crankbaits, spinners, jigs.
Biggest Crappie you have caught: 1 lb and 15 oz. I know it's not much, but I'll get a three pounder one of these days.
Favorite snack to take fishing: Saltine Crackers and Vienna sausages
Favorite lake: Wheeler, Wilson, Cedar Lakes and Shoals Creek in NW Alabama, but that's only because they are close by. Any lake close by would be my favorite.
The person that got you started crappie fishing: My Dad, who really never taught me how as much as took me and let me figure it out by myself. After I learned and was able to catch more fish than he did, he never went with me again. Today, I hardly ever go without taking a neighbor kid with me. I figure I owe them.

    Favorite technique: Jigging brush.Tightlineing

Memory: Grandpa taking his first vacation in over 20 years to take me to his and mine favorite lake. Limited out with 2lb average crappie for 5 out of 6 days. The last day we both were worn out and didn't stay long, but still caught an icechest full.
Lake: Was Kitterlin Creek Bay(Jena, La.) for 30years until people bought all the land around it and posted it without public access, drained it last year, cut out all the trees (big cypresses), and are now letting it fill back up to make a weekend DUCK HUNTING LAKE. I don't have a favorite waterway anymore and can't stand DUCK HUNTING LAWYERS!!!
Got me crappie fishing: My wonderful and never forgotten GRANDPA!
Biggest?: Not sure. Never had scales until about 3years ago and since then had 5 one day from 2 1/4 to 2 1/2lbs. Have caught 3 I can remember that were bigger than any of the 5, but no scales then
