I have a Lowrance H2O and use a hot maps chip in it. The screen is small but I can see it good enough at that distance. I have it mounted by my foot while I'm running the trolling motor. It seems to be much more accurate if you have it mounted in a Ram mount at about a 30 degree angle than if it is laying flat on the boat floor. I think it aids in the triangulation from the satelites if it's up at an angle.

I agree also...I also think if you mount it on your rig...Rod mount...or ram mount as said you really have a good view of it. The screen really isn't that bad either...most of them are 2.5 - 3" diagonal..so if you think about the typical 5 or so inch screen on a sonar/gps unit that gets split in half....you are about the same anyways. I've seen alot of mounts on rod holders that have the gps (handheld) and sonar mounted on them right in front of you...pretty neat setup. also makes it easier to run in and plug to the computer to chance stuff up.

I didn't think about that but thats a good point...most of them have the reciever mounted towards the top of the unit...if its laying down flat you could loose line of sight with the sat. ecspecially if its down in the boat.

Unless Lowrance has made improvements don't get the H2O color unit. The speed does not go below 1.2 mph (for slow trolling purposes). The color looks great. I traded the one I bought in for the b & w unit. It works great. I also have the navionics card in mine.

Bow. But, my boat is only 16' and I can see my Himminbird from the console. My transducer; however, is on transom and I'm not happy with that. I have to move my stern into position to get a good depth reading. To solve problem I am buying an inexpensive unit and mounting transducer on trolling motor and placing the unit itself on bow.

If only one then it must be on the console for driving at night and finding some of the paths going through the trees here. I am luck as I just bought a Humminbird 1197 to go with my Lowrance LCX 27C so if I put the LCX up front I would have one in both places.

As inexpensive as the technology is today and as important as it is to REALLY zeroing in on brushpiles two different units is the best setup. I run a Lowrance LCX27c on the console (transducer and gps receiver on the transom). On the bow, I run a Humminbird 777 and a Garmin GPSMap76cx handheld side-by-side (transducer shooting through the hull not more than a foot or two from their location). Notice that transducers and gps units/receivers are as close together as possible - this is key for accuracy. The console unit has the maps and waypoints for navigation and getting in the area of any specific waypoint. The bow configuration of units is for zeroing in and staying on the spot.

The Garmin handheld is the primary gps unit. So, I make all waypoint additions and deletions there first, then take it and the SD card from the LCX to the computer, using ExpertGPS I back up my waypoint file and load it to the card.

I bought an extra mount for my Hummingbird 161 GPS Sonar and a TM mounted transducer. When under power I keep it at console. When rigged to fish, I move it to bow. I have an Eagle X67 color Sonar top of dash for stern fisherperson. Works well and saved the price of a unit.

    Default Lost Paw Pa

My Paw Pa would be wondering if this discussion was about fishing or what. He used three trees; which are probably gone now. Caught more fish with him than anybody. He would be aggrevated with me for all of the stuff I need to try to catch half of the fish he did without.

I understand Don and we have talked about this around the campfires at Crappie Camp before. I have told this story before and it's worth telling again. When I first started crappie fishing I didn't know what a line-up (the three trees) was. I learned and using a low resolution sonar unit, found the brushpile, threw a marker and fished it. Each set up would take a minute or two. Later, we invested in a GPS unit and started to learn it's benefits. Since then I can say that little piece of technology has increased my catch rate. What once took a minute or two to get on and fish now takes just seconds. The end result at the end of the day is your jig or minnow spends more time in the strike zone, thus putting more fish in the livewell. Agreed, technology can be a hindrance when used improperly and set up incorrectly. I figure that's the biggest problem most don't examine. It's not a magic wand. But, when used effectively, it's well worth it. My father has said on more than one occasion that he wished grandpa was still alive to see how I fish now, because we catch more fish than generations past. I once had a man call me and lectured me good about how he can catch more crappie just using a jonboat and sculling paddle than me and all my technology and fancy boat. I offered him a free fishing trip but never got the pleasure of meeting the gentleman. Go figure. Come and see me DP and well drown some minners!
