I wonder if that is true with aluminum as well? Fiberglass is by nature smoother than aluminum...less friction. Seems like aluminum would benefit by having some of the roughness taken out of it.

You sure got me on that one. Would have never figured that.

    Thanks Pete,

I have read this discussion before. A waxed hull creates too much surface tension, slowing the boat down. I have heard of some folks putting small dimples in the pad area of their aluminum boats with a ball-peen hammer to break the tension. Just like how the dimples on a golf ball breaks the air tension to get it to fly farther.
I'll probably put some "dimples" in mine this weekend on Reelfoot!

That being said, I wonder why surfers wax their boards?

I saw the Budweiser Jet Race boat. They were rubbing something that looked like hard wax on the pontoons before the race at Guntersville. It looked more like paraffin.
    I dunno.

Wow! I never thought cleaning the bottom of your boat would be such a scientific process. Now if I put some dents in the bottom I can tell the potential buyers I did intentionally for performance!

    Question pledge

New to the site, but I did want to slip a quick comment in here. A guy was telling me the same thing about wax...that it'd slow a boat down. But he says if ya want to speed up to wipe the boat down with PLEDGE... as in furniture polish! I haven't personally tried that...yet. Anyone else have any experience with that?
